Getting Started

The textbook summarizes the group process throughout various phases of the social worker’s interaction with the group. It emphasizes the skills involved in assessment, planning, group development, and facilitation of group conversation. This chapter also explains the group facilitator’s ability to manage conflict.

In this activity, you will watch a TEDx talk from an expert practitioner in conflict management, William Ury. Then you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on your own reactions to conflict and your ability to manage conflict as a future social worker. You will complete an inventory and answer self-reflection questions. You will reflect more on your conflict management style in the next activity, as well.

Background Information

Conflict management, also referred to as conflict resolution, conflict transformation, or alternative dispute resolution, is a separate field of study and practice. Still, it overlaps and benefits social work practice. For many years, social workers have been incorporating skills and concepts from conflict management to benefit their clients and communities. As an initial introduction and opportunity for reflection, you will learn about your conflict management style and how it might affect your future social work practice.

Note: In the next workshop, you will observe and reflect on the use of spirituality in group practice, specifically in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) groups. You will be required to attend and observe an open AA group in your community, so you should seek opportunities and create a plan to attend this type of group now. In many communities, AA and NA groups are held on a weekly or even daily basis. Most groups are open and available to the public, with days and times posted online. Contact your instructor as soon as possible if you have difficulty locating a group to attend. You will be directed to observe and analyze specific dynamics and skills in the next workshop.

  2. In your textbook, Social Work with Groups: Comprehensive Practice and Self-Care , read Chapter 4, “Group Dynamics: Goals and Norms and Chapter 6, “Task Groups.”
  3. Watch the Ted Talk by William Ury, “The Walk from “No” to “Yes”. As you watch the video, consider how Ury’s reflection on conflict and its management could apply to family and group practice settings.

  4. Download and complete the My Third Side Inventory.pdf, adapted by Joshua Weiss. Include the final page in which you tally your responses and identify your three most common roles.
